The Florida Animation Festival is Coming to Tallahassee!

First annual Florida Animation Festival

A 4-day animation film festival launches this year in Florida!

June 1, 2016

Tallahassee, FL— The Florida Animation Festival is launching to develop a long-term festival base for animation in Florida. Year one will take the first step with a global introduction to independent animation, while year two will move toward a traditional submissions-based program.

The festival was organized by John Fraser and the Tallahassee Film Society, and is being coordinated by Dan Wester, co-founder of TFS. The festival is sponsored by Wells Fargo, The Pod Advertising, Leon County, and the Council on Culture & Arts (COCA).

The Tallahassee Film Society saw Tallahassee as a natural place for an animation festival, as FSU is home to Florida’s only collegiate animation program, and Florida has the second largest population of independent animators outside of the state of California. There is also a disparity between the number of film festivals in Florida, and the number that focus on animation.

The Florida Animation Festival will take place across four days with screenings for a variety of age groups and interests. Weekend passes start at $15, with VIP passes going for $30.

The festival will begin on Thursday, June 16th at 7:00pm with the opening feature, Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then by filmmaker Brent Green. The rest of the showings are as follows:

  • The 17th Annual Animation Show of Shows: June 17th, 7:00pm, June 18th, 5:00pm, June 19th, 5:00pm
  • Animated Oscar Shorts: June 17th, 5:30pm, June 18th, 7:00pm, June 19th, 3:00pm
  • Spike & Mike’s Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation (18+): June 17th, 9:00pm, June 18th, 9:00pm

Free Children’s Showings:

  • Song of the Sea: June 18th, 2:00pm
  • Best of the New York International Children's Film Festival: June 18th 3:30pm, June 19th 1:30pm
“I think anyone who is into art is going to love the festival, anyone into animation will love the festival. It really is some of the best animation going on in the world.” - Dan Wester, festival coordinator
